Perennial is a word that describes plants that last multiple years. These plants typically die back in the winter and come back in the spring. Their roots rely on the warmth and nutrients from the earth to keep them alive in a state of dormancy in the cold months.
Different plants are considered perennial in different climates around the world. Regions are assigned a hardiness zone based on average winter temperatures. Canada’s hardiness scale goes from 0, the coldest, to 9, the warmest. When selecting perennials you want to ensure their hardiness is graded equal to or lower than your zone, for best chances of survival.
Since Markham is located in zone 6, the majority of the perennials we carry are suited to that zone. However, we do also carry perennials graded for colder zones, so Valleyview is still a great option for customers beyond the GTA.
Nursery
Certain perennials are considered part of our nursery stock. These plants come back year after year, but do not die back to the ground in the winter. They typically have woody stems that remain intact. Nursery plants are trees, shrubs, and other perennials with this woody characteristic.
Native Perennials
Incorporating native plants into your garden is a great way to help biodiversity in your community. Native plants encourage pollinators like butterflies, and are generally don’t compete with each other for resources, as they are fully adapted for our environment.
Valleyview carries an assortment of native Ontario perennials so you can build a gorgeous garden that helps the environment.
